However, while studying at the University of London, Michael became significantly disillusioned with the Republican Party. For instance, Michael opposed the Iraq war and infringement on civil liberties which took place under the Bush administration. Upon his return to the United States, Michael officially located to the state of Maryland to pursue a career in higher education and registered as a Democrat. He also started a private consulting company to help PhD students and businesses with statistical analysis (www.statsbusters.com).

Michael attained a position as Visiting Professor in the Department of Economics at Loyola College. In his Macroeconomic classes, Michael has taken a strong position against the Iraq war. He has demonstrated that spending on the Iraq war has the potential of causing significant demand pull inflation in the United States.

The Early Years

Michael parents instilled in him a strong work ethic and belief that the government should not infringe on the rights of its citizens.

His father, Raymond Babula, was the son of a police officer. Michael’s grandfather came to the United States as an immigrant from southern Poland and served in the United States military during World War One. Raymond also enlisted during the Korean War and became an electrician. Raymond was an excellent provider and caring parent for his children.

In 1983, Raymond found himself unemployed as a result of a blue collar recession in the United States. Michael was five when his father lost his job and health benefits. At this time, Michael also fell ill with meningitis and had to be hospitalized. His parents went into debt to pay for medical and hospitalization bills. Michael vividly remembers those times, and consequently, understands the need for Americans, and especially, children to have access to healthcare benefits.

Education

Michael attended Rutgers University, and with rising tuition costs, he took full-time employment as a Customer Support Representative at night. His first job involved fixing laptop computers. At Rutgers College, he was on the Dean’s list and graduated a half year early in January 2000.

Next, Michael decided to pursue graduate education and attended a masters program at Seton Hall University. He excelled at finance courses and took a particular interest in corporate social responsibility long before the scandals at Enron and Arthur Anderson hit the news. In essays, Michael argued that a strong principal/agent problem involving stock options could develop at corporations nationally. He graduated second in his business class and went to work as a financial analyst at Phillips Van Heusen.

The MBA in Finance only wetted Michael’s desire to learn. In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, the University of London accepted Michael into a dual Politics and Psychology PhD program. This was highly unusual because candidates for PhD typically study in one field. However, Michael’s theory was multidisciplinary. He argued that the stress has the potential to act as a catalyst in causing needs gratified people to pursue pure altruism. He developed new paradigms in the fields of politics and psychology, and after three years of study, successfully defended his thesis before a panel of internal and external examiners.

Return to the United States

In 2006, Michael took up residence in Maryland with his fiancée. With his company increasing in size, Michael decided to give back to the community by teaching. He has taught social psychology at Marymount University, statistics at the University of Baltimore, and economics at Loyola College. Michael married on New Year’s Eve and continues to reside in Montgomery Village, Maryland.

The Next Step

Why would a satisfied and successful doctor want to run for Congress? The reason is because Michael has become extremely dissatisfied with America’s political leadership. If the current political leadership is left unchecked, Michael is convinced that the United States will suffer tremendous economic hardship and further loss of credibility worldwide.

In 2004, former Treasury Secretary, Paul O’Neill, said that President Bush, at cabinet meetings, was "like a blind man in a roomful of deaf people.” Today, oil prices have climbed to over $94 per barrel. The Iraq war could cost more than $1 Trillion. The dollar has been significantly devalued worldwide and is worth less than the Canadian dollar. The Federal Reserve continues to cut interest rates to bail out criminal predatory lending which took place in the mortgage industry. These factors have the potential to lead to significant demand-pull and cost-push inflation and could completely derail the United States economy and lead to future layoffs.

While the economy is on the verge of collapse, the current administration has also engaged fear mongering and violated American’s civil liberties. Americans are wiretapped without warrants. Secret memos demonstrate that the Justice Department has approved torture of foreign suspects with the use of torture techniques such as water-boarding. And the administration continues to scapegoat by supporting an unpopular war in Iraq.

The United States federal government also spends $600 per second on the war on drugs and is expected to arrest 1.6 million people on drug related crimes this year. The United States has effectively lost the war on drugs and continues to drain important law enforcement resources away from important causes such as fighting terrorism.

Michael has always been committed to Jeffersonian principles and wishes to limit the size of the federal government, immediately withdraw from Iraq, decriminalize illegal drugs, and encourage the use of prudent fiscal policy to offset rising inflation. He is convinced that America can be the greatest nation in the world going forward, however, everything depends on what the government, media, and academic institutions do to the country going forward.

Consequently, Michael has decided to use his skills as a doctor, businessman, and educator to launch a battle not only to promote a renewed Jeffersonian vision in Congress, which is demanded by the American public, but also, to promote a vision which has the potential to rescue the future of America from a reckless government which lost its way over the past decade.

Michael's Grandfather, ChesterMichael's mother, Ann, was the daughter of a firefighter and the youngest of five children. Ann’s father also served in the military during World War One. She attended Catholic schools in Staten Island, New York and married in 1960. During the 1960s, she had three children and obtained her real estate license. During the 1970s, she had two more children. She served as President of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and was elected to the school board in Lebanon Township, New Jersey. She won the Lebanon Township service award for volunteerism. As a teenager, Michael commented that he was lucky enough to have the “mother of the century.” She inspired her son to want to gain the opportunity to help people through public service.

Ann also taught her son to be nonjudgmental. She taught Sunday school and Michael's father prayed the rosary often. His parents taught him to respect the rights of all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.

He has also argued for subsidizing health-care and higher education. Michael reasons that a healthier and more educated workforce would significantly increase productivity levels of American workers and lead to a new era of economic growth. Recently, the Cambridge University Press published Michael’s article on changing political values in the United States.

Michael ran for public office at age 21 and was one of the youngest candidates to have ever won a primary in New Jersey. He was endorsed by Former President Gerald R. Ford and called a Lincoln Republican by fellow academics at Rutgers College. This is because he was strongly in favor of promoting civil rights and civil liberties within the local community.
After running for public office, Michael entered the private sector. He worked as a financial analyst at the major clothing retailer Phillips Van Heusen. In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, Michael was so moved by volunteer efforts of young Americans that he decided to apply for a doctorate at the University of London to study the psychology of altruism.
Baby Mike
Dr. Michael Babula was born the youngest of five children in a working class family. His father was an electrician who served during the Korean conflict and his mother was a retired real estate agent from Staten Island, New York.
